sounds like i running mud tires

the sound gets louder as i speed up and is coming from the rear end. I thought it was my rear tires, the pax side is fine with lots of tread, but the driver side tire (spare, but regular tire size) is a little bald on the inside.

i think it started when i changed out to the spare after a leaking tire but i cant remember.
But i dont think that maybe the cause, cuz the noise can get pretty loud. So maybe its the differential?

Bearings inside? the cv boots are ripped on the half shafts, but they were always ripped since i got the car and it wasnt making that noise when i first got the car.

    alignment? other suggestions?

So how long have you been driving without boots covering the CV joints?

well i got the car 2 months ago, and now i have time to check all components of the car and finally noticed them ripped, so i guess by the lack of grease in them, they have been torn for probably a lot longer than 2 months.

can you guys recommend a place to get new cv boots, grease, or maybe there is a repair kit for the half shafts?

        thanks alot guys for helping

Sounds to me it could be either the CV axles or could be the tires. If you drive with bad shocks, the tires get chopped and can sound like that.

i'd say cv joints but if not
rub the tread on your tires
it should be somewhat smooth, if not you need to rotate them so they are running oppisite so that the tread lays flat and not standing up
hard to explain but it does make a difference

while you are changing the cv's might as well do the wheel bearings while you kave it apart. mine sounded that way from just the bearing though.

the bearings did cross my mind, is there a way to check to make sure without dissasembling everything?

and also, i noticed that i can only really hear the "whirring" noise (mud tire sounds) only in the car, when i stick my head out the window i cant really hear it. hopefully that will help you guys help me diagnose the problem.

                thanks once again guys

I have a similar sound on my car I can't figure out... However mine is louder when I'm going slow between 20-70 kph... On the hwy it's totally quiet but then again cabrios are loud on the hwy due to all the wind noise. I noticed this sound after I replaced my 4.27 open diff with a 4.10lsd... It's not a howling sound like it normally would be if the diff was worn, it sounds like driving on mud or off road tires. My tires are pretty worn and I'm hoping that's the problem since they need to be replaced anyway but I doubt it. Does worn half shafts make that kind of sound? I doubt they're worn since my car only has 90k on it and the only new part is the diff. I'm also using red line lsd fluid so that' s not it. It's not very loud so I'm not worried but I would like to eventualy fix it.

well i think my case was due to a shitty spare tire that has about 25% tread and isnt balanced.
ill waiting for some free time to get a new tire and balance it and let you guys know

well got a new tire on rear driver side and had it balanced and inflated all tires back to 30 psi, but still get the mud tire noise. so i move onto the next possibilities in order.

                      wheel bearings
                      half shaft and/or cv boots
differential (low on oil, or mlfunctioning)
flex disk (i have one waiting to go in)
                      driveshaft center bearing
                      U Joints
motor mounts (waiting to be installed)

it makes the noise in gear or coasting in Neutral, im trying to find out if its rpm related or speed related

                      but wish me luck

turns out to be my pax side halfshaft and wheel bearing in the rear.

im replacing the entire half shaft. i got quoted $50 + shipping from bavarian auto recycling for a good one, but i havent heard from them yet w/ a shiopping quote.

and im replacing it b/c the cv joints are horrible on pax half shaft and my bearing is shot and im putting my suspension on at the same time. Lol ive been driving for like 3 months w/ my car sounding like 4x4 truck with mud tires, i can wait to have my car quiet again!
