Speedometer question

Recently , my speedometer has been acting strange. On some days it works perfectly fine and on some days it will cease to work! Sometimes, tapping on the meter's screen(around the SI board) will cause it to come to life. It's starting to become really annoying as the speedo now has a 'now I'm working, now I don't ' gremlin as I drive around.

Help! I have checked the connector to the speed sensor in the rear diff and it's fine. Even took out the speed sensor and gave it a good cleaning. Have even cleaned and lubed the pins on the lefta and right connectors that plug into the rear of the insrument housing.

I had the same problem, I just replace the speedo with a used one from another E30 and it fixed the problem. Its usually a problem with the gears in the back stripping out. Sometimes it won't work because the gear will stop on the stripped section.
