Aux Fan - is this sufficient

Im currently running my aux fan on low speed for radiator cooling and is currently doing the job perfectly, my concern is that do these fans give trouble? should i install another fan as backup? i do alot of long distance driving and dont want to overheat....please help

You do not have a fan clutch installed? The aux fan is used mostly for the a/c.

sorry my fault for not stating that i did the s50 swap and deleted the viscous clutch fan

for me it was sufficient in the colder months however it will get hot in traffic. i bought myself one of these to help keep temps down. i haven't installed it yet but will most certainly post pics and results when i do. i hope to install it over the weekend along with my a/c!!!!

Also Mohammed, as long as you dont sit still like in traffic long distant driving isn't a problem. As long as there's airflow you'll be fine

thanks guys .... but what im actually looking at is the durability of the aux fan, sure it works perfectly for me too and also if i stand in traffic it seems to do the job.....should i install another electric fan for backup???

Are you running it full time or thru the fan switch?

I run mine with the fan switch and it rarely comes on. Some run it full time and I often wonder if that is blocking airflow when driving at speed...

As long as the wiring was good and the motor isn't getting hot when in use for a while, I wouldn't worry about it. If it dies, you can drive a good long way without it as long as you keep moving. Once you have to stop for traffic, it's going to heat up. Then you turn off the AC, turn on the heater with the fan on full bore, and you can still make it a bit further as long as it isn't boiling hot out.

In other words, it isn't as if you have to pull over and stop because the aux fan died. You probably wouldn't even notice it until you hit stop and go traffic.

I saw a lot of nice E30's in Cape Town when I was there a year ago.

I dunno about the fans on our cars specifically, but most of the electric fan failures I've seen are motor bearings, which will give you plenty of warning. One in a buddy's daily has made intermittent bearing noise for months, but has still not seized up. The only time I saw a motor fry internally was because the bearings went, the fan locked up, and the oversize fuse some asshole put in the fan circuit didn't blow before the motor did. I wouldn't carry a spare...

we do have quite a bit of e30s here in SA, but nothing compared to the ones u guys have....
