    Check panel oil light question

    Hi

I own a 1988 325is m20 e30. On my check panel the brake light and oil light stay on although the brake light periodically goes off. What do these lights correspond too? My bulbs all work on the brakes and running lights. As for the oil light, could that be the oil level sender, the oil temperature thermo unit, etc.
    Thanks for your help
    Barry

I assume you mean the check panel by your rear view mirror.

It means you're low on oil and your brake lights are out.

The same thing has been happening to me. I know my brake lights are good, and I have been compulsively checking my oil, so I just chalked it up to a weird short, but if anyone knows what could cause it, I would love to fix it.

You need a new oil level sensor or to check the wiring that goes to it. The brake light can be a number of things like a corroded bulb, corroded relay by the antenna or bad relay, or chaffed wiring to the tails, and even a bad 3rd brake light. Does the check light go out after you step on the brake?

Thanks, I will check the oil level sender. For me, the brake check light will go on after I apply the brakes and then stay on until I restart the car. I'll take a look at the bulbs and rear harness for corrosion.
