BIG Shoe Horn needed :) (56k warning)

Just test fitted my 1984 633csi engine into my 87 325is parts car, Right now it's in position 3 and I didn't have to pound the fire wall at all, To get the downpies on I will ahve to beat the crap out of the passenger footwell to make it fit. I still need to bolt on the tranny, and a spair diff housing, so I can figure how long to make the driveshaft. I'm still planning on starting to pull the m20 out of my 88 325is come December 12 when I'm done with school, and hopefull the M30 will be in an running before Christmas.

I knew the M30 would be a tight fit But I was starting to wonder if it would fit, and it barely does, you have to get it at the exact right angle and tilt to squeze it in. The hood barely clears it also, the heatshild rubs the intake in multiple places. But it fits

Looks perfect - not bang the hell out of the firewall and put the motor into the passanger seat. You'll thank me for it later.

PS _ I clearenced the passanger footwell 1" or so. It depends on where the motor is and what pipes you are using. Eventually I am going with custom exhaust from manifolds back.

Your motor seems a bit low. Is that it resting on the oil pan? I have about 1/4" inch clearence between pan and subframe. The stock (new) m20 rubber mounts sem to be holding up fine. But I plan on replacing them more offten as they are cheap.

You should have the top of the intake level - and then you know your motor is level

PS -ask santa for a decent digital camera for christmas!

Can you imangine doingiti WITH the tranny on??? - I've seem pics of it done....but DAM!

It's in position 3 on Tino's mounts, no firewall banging needed for the engine. The downpipes well lets just say the passenger's feet will stay warm I had to bang and bang to make my Dual downpipes fit. I bolted the tranny up Wednesday and will measure the driveshaft tommorow and probally drop it off in town.
It's sitting on brand new m20 rubber mounts, and there is a good bit of room between the pan and the subframe.

No not yet, I spent the day bolting on small stuff, hammering the firewal, and shortening the shiftlinkage.
FYI AC Won't fit the compressor clutch has 1mm clearence from the radiator, so if the engine shifts at all it will rub.

How much room do you have between the (e28?) radiator and the dist cap? I've got 1/2 or more.

under 1/2 inch To me it dosn't seem like the engine is in positon 3 but the mounts are in the forward most hole. I don't know how the E28 radiator would work with position 2.
                  Hi couple questions?
you used a e30 rear driveshaft section mated to a m30 front correct?
And also my whole engine has the rear tilted down slightly, the tranny and engine are both on brand new mounts. Does your engine sit perfectly level? the tranny is up plenty high it's as if the motor mounts need to be a tad shorter. As right now my stock E28 airbox won't clear the hood, Where as it did before I mounted the tranny up.

                    Small update
Tranny is in, Passenger foot well is well dented  I started hooking up the exterior engine electronics. If I was going to be home this weekend it would be running come sunday afternoon.
The Upper shift linkage I shortened 1 inch, I just need the lower selector rod shortened, and then get the driveshaft done.

Yea, we got my motor almost perfectly level. We used "shims" (fender washers) on the rubber motor mounts to dial in the tilt (side to side tilt, not front to back)

Front to back tilt is a function of the motor mount brackets and the tranny bracket. Hard for me to tell you what's up since you are using a differnet tranny/bracket combo.

When i close my hood the TPS touches the hood backing thing.

I uses a e30 m3 DS - still need to be shortened, but the flanges front and rear are correct. and the center support bearing bolts up in the correct spot.

Ya I don't have the rubber motor mounts torqued down yet the engine is just resting on them so maybe that's it. Side to side it looks good.
I did find an interesting driveshaft combo. In the garage I have two front sections off some unknown e30's well I tried one and it was the right length from the tranny to the center support. But it has the small flange. So if one wanted to for cheapely they could put the small flange on the m30 tranny and just bolt in the driveshaft.
I think it came from a m20 auto but not 100% positive. Hard to keep tract when I've worked on around 25 e30's

I can't wait to see this thing in action! I would love to do a s50 swap in the 318is, but that will have to wait a few months..... I love the car but DAMN it is slow! The 3.0 would be just right. Maybe it will happen before next summer and we can compare the two in the mountains!

The a/c will fit, my friend still runs his.

                            He used the e28 radiator.

btw his is for sale at pmcar.com

It's a dang tight fit, I found my mounts wern't perfectly lined up, but even after getting them lined up, You can barely see light betweent he compressor clutch and the radiator.
