I need to look into this for my car too. I guess I could just wait for it to cool down though. Temps are in the upper 90's almost everyday here. :(

freeze 12 is something like 80% 134a and 20% HCFC-142, you can put it in there, but it wont be much if any better than straight 134a. Also with the added CFC's that it has, its a doomed product anyway, the epa has put out a ban producing or importing anything with HCFC-142 beginning 2010.

tons of mis-information in this thread.

R12 can still be sold in the US, but the handler, supplier and retail source must all b certified by the state and federal governments to be able to do so.

The reason is that some types of specality refridgaration equipent can only be run on r12 and a conversion is either too costly or not-possible.

You can still get R12 from these sources, but not to use in an automotive applicaiton.

Hence the crazy high price for old-stock R12 that shops still have from pre-ban.

The easiest way to just get some cold air: Vacume out all of the old refridegrant with a pump from Harbor freight (12bucks), then fill with ANY fully synthetic R134a+ (this includes the neccesary lubrication). bingo cold air

The right way: Change over components to R134a and lil work...done...$$$ and longer to do

The "other" way: find someone with r12 equipment and gauges and acceess to it and pay cash for a refill.

IF your interested in the latter, and can drive to my house, my roommate has the ability to get R12 legally and will fill systems for a small fee

Here in Vegas my 84 was not really happy...so off to the AC shop. They take a look and tell me mine is a conversion and in Vegas I will never get cold air in the summer so I should switch back. R12 is $100 per pound and I need 2.5 pounds. With the addition of an electric fan in place of the stock fan/clutch I have VERY cold AC. Maybe colder than my newer 911. It seemed expensive but it beats polled down windows and all the "dry" heat.

I've had good success with the r134a kits you can get for $25-40. Like Naplm00 said, to do it the 'right way' you should change the components, but I never have and it's always worked great.

R12 is supposedly the better refrigerant. I've also heard that early cars that used R134 would smell strange after a certain interval of continued AC use.

My AC doesn't blow cold but it appears my AC clutch isn't working. I'm going to try and get that working first and foremost.

This was very common in older Euro vehicles (pre 1980) and some late model domestics.

Ive never seen this issue in our cars

You don't need to vacuum anything.
