Im also planning just piggyback. I just want to be able to change the fuel and timing maps for when I am running on 100 octane. I'll let the DME deal with the rest of the shit.
There is soo much tuning involved in running standalone. Barrett has been working on his for a long ass time. The nice thing is I get his coils because most OBD coils are odd impedences so its easier to pick them to go with your tuning.

Question 2 is why?
Throttle response, Economy, Power (not much more i know), flexibility for future mods..
I'm assumin that it would be much easier on a non VANOS...
The BMW DME is the most complex in the world. When they came out the ones for m50tu were years ahead, hell, look at the new m5, that thing's DME could run the Space Shuttle.
The OBD1 DME is plenty fast and hardly a hinderance. The only thing between you and the throttle plate is a little steel cable. A piggyback will do plenty to give you control.
If you really want a peaky engine just get a non vanos and get cams. Bore and stay as underswuare as possible and get individual TBs. That will be all the response you need.
/edit: wait a second, you are in England. You have more than enough repsonse. Just get the damn S50B30.
