anyone ever built one? using s52 bottom end and a nv head with a shrick intake cam and and a moved intake cam? I think tha hardest part would be to tune it but then again ms or vems is cheap.

I don't have too much info but can share what I remember. My dad built some of these in the 90's for customers that wanted built strokers for their '92 325i or their E30 that had a non-VANOS swap -- without going to a new motor. That was before you could buy a complete M50 for under $500. I remember the 3.1 NV being really potent for a street motor with stock 240/240 cams (or maybe the swap/Schrick setup), pull the trigger at 2500 and it was like a freight train to 7000. Most of them were 85 or 86 bore at over 11:1 that really hauled, even in an E36. Though you could safely say the same for a VANOS 3.2. There was a chip for the 402, 403 or 405 that was custom and worked really well for the strokers, but I don't know where you'd find a copy nowadays. TRM or others could probably burn something.

240/240? I thought the stock cams were asymmetric? Thus swapping the more aggressive intake cam to the exhaust side and getting a more aggressive custom ground intake cam..
As an aside, my condolences about your dad. Believe it or not, I remember reading your impressions on the S50 you guys stuck in that 318is years and years ago, probably back when I was a freshman, or still in high school. Definitely a grave loss for both your family, friends and the E30 community.
just an Idea since locally nv motors can be had for cheap and I have a spare 3.2 bottom end kicking around. love the way my old nv swap moved felt just as fast if not faster them my m52 car but you could really rev the crap out of them and they just kept going....and going and going...
Stock for stock, the TU motor is a little faster than the NV since it's got more area under the curve.
However it also had less aggressive cams stock and wasn't as "fun" (didn't "pick up" at high rpm like M20B25s and M50NVs do). It didn't FEEL quite as fast since there wasn't the sensation of increasing torque, the torque is always there through more of the rev range.
I'd prefer a NV, partially since I don't want to deal with the vanos complications (noise and failures), and partially because I'd like to retain some of that high-end scream of the M20.

Stock cams on the Non-VANOS motors were 240/240 degree, I think lift was 9.7 intake and 9.2 exhaust but you'll want to double check that. The Schrick intake was 252 or 256 with 10+ lift; the trick was to put the high lift 240 on the exhaust and the Schrick on the intake then degree in the cams -- roughly the same timing as stock 3.0/3.2 camshafts. Stock M50 VANOS motors were 228/228 but I don't know the lift off hand.
Someone offered me an e34 m50nv motor one time... and another man had a e39 530i short block that the head bolt holes were stripped out in, so was going to let me have it for like $100 (the cost of a crank core)...
I'm thinking m54b30 crank, rods and pistons in a m50 block with an NV head and swapped cams would be SICK
but the e34 motor locked up two weeks later, and the e39's was turned in for a core, before I could jump on them....

you guys need to stop giving me bad ideas I haven't even finished my m60 swap and now I am thinking about going back to a m50... only wish I could drive more than one car at a time
