I'm going to be replacing my rear wheel bearings this weekend. I have a borrowed rear bearing tool already, but I'm wondering if it is recommended to use an air impact gun for removal or installation? I figured probably not for installation, but I don't care if I tear the thing apart on removal. Just wanted to save some time if possible :)

Rear bearing replacement.....use air impact?

ok do you have a machiner nearby....take off the whole trailing arm and have him pull the hub and press the bearing in. It'll save you TONS of time and effort!
I tell everyone this when I see a rear wheel bearing thread! Good Luck

If you're using the B90, do not use an impact gun. Doing so can mar the internal splines of the hub if the tool gets misaligned and the screw threads start digging into the hub. Also, the thrust bearing is not meant to take impacts like that. Just use a ratchet--it doesn't that that much longer.

I agree with transatlantic, just take your trailing arm to a machiner or someone who can press it out and press the new one in. Way less of a headache and have it done right the first time around.BMWCCA # 482566

Taking the trailing arm off is silly and a complete waste of time. Not to mention you'll have to pay to get the press work done. If you borrowed the proper wheel bearing tool, that will work just fine. Just take care not to damage the threads or splines on the axle stub. I recommend lightly chasing the splines with a file prior to installation. I wouldn't use an impact wrench for anything on this job either.

its silly if someone has no access to the the press. Hence the reason I asked 'do you have...' its inexpensive and easy with less grunt work. What's silly is people not using the pullers correctly and destroying the hub and the new bearing. Even without the puller I've seen people bang on the hub and/or bolt on rotors reverse and bang that way and reverting to flintstones carwork.....if you don't know what you're doing I recommend doing my way and paying no more than than a dub to have it done properly. yabba dabba doo!
*edit air tools are bad idea, and if you do it anyway it's a bad habit to get into!
