    Fog Light wiring Modification's

Well I found a artical on http://www.bmwe30.net/cgi-bin/datacg...178&Section=02, states that you jumper on the fog head light relay #30 and #87 to get the fog's to run without having your headlights on, well jumpering those leads dosnt do anything but turn the headlights on all the time, Pre 88 ....

I'm just curious, what exactly is the point of having your foglights turn on without your headlights?

to do the pin 30 to 87 you have to have an 89 with ellipsoids.. i just did this on mine and it works. its kinda cool to be sittin in a parking lot at night with just your fogs on, or if you are out with some friends and hangin out somewhere you can just put the fogs on. plus, for me driving with my headlights on makes my alternator squeal, so during the day, i just run the fogs and it stays quiet.

Plus, Fog is a bitch, and safety first, right?

I tried that pin 30 to 87 also, it didn't work cus i have an 88.

I want my fogs to come on without my headlights, cus at dusk I dont want my hids on.....same thing early morning before the sun rises.

Im planning to re-wire the fogs, cus i can't find a way around it.

foglights project what, 25 feet? I don't see how that would help at all (and I drive in fog all the time)

sorry I just can't see getting on the freeway at 70mph with only foglights on...

I have a pair of Hella 500's on my car they are very bright, now on to the question at hand,

                  With:
                  Ignition Switch Off
                  Fog Switch off
                  Head light Off

                  @ relay on box # 30 12v #85 3.5 #87 To Fog Light's #86 0v

                  With
                  Ignition Switch ON
                  Fog Switch ON
                  Head light ON

                  @ relay #30 12v #85 12v #87 To Fog light's #86 .035v

                  @ the Switch

                  Ignition Switch ON
                  Fog Switch off

The Yellow/Green Wire coming off the Headlight switch has 12v and the Gray wire has 3.9v

                  @ Switch

                  Ignition Switch On
                  Fog Switch On

The Yellow/Green Wire is common with ground or Ov and the gray has 12v

Here is what is going on in the circuit

When you switch the headlight switch on it sends 12v to #85 on the realy and the fog switch on the dash works as a path to ground to energize the relay,, I am used to it being the other way around #85 being the ground and the switch #86 providing it with 12v, to energize the coil to spring the realy shut connecting #87 and #30 to power the light's I am going to pull the fuse block this afternoon and mod # 85 to be 12v on Ignition on and take off the yellow/geen from the fog light switch and connect it to ground, this will allow me to run fog's at anytime, regardless of headlight switch position, Ill let you know if it work's,

I recall one day in particular last year, it was extremely foggy and I could see more with the low beams off rather than on. I had to drive home with just the parking lights on, no way anyone could see me coming. If I had done my independent fog mod by then, it would have significantly helped with the visibility of both the road and my car to other people.

I've tried many methods, none have worked. I might retry them, as I was using too large of a gauge to bend the wire properly.

Well I got ahold of some real wiring diagrams, the one's i had before in the bently blow chunks,

What is happing with the Fog light relay

                        #30 - Ignition on 12+
#85 - There is a wire coming from the low beam headlight relay #87 that goes 12+ with switch on
                        #87 - to fog's
                        #86 - to switch n to ground.

                        # 85 must have 12v and #86 must have the ground (switch on) so the relay closes and the lights come on,

To allow the Fog lights to run independet of the headlights, unbolt the fuse block and take the wire coming from #85 (on the fog light relay) and connect it to a parking light 12+ or a Ignition 12+ dependent on how you whant it to work, allso you will need to take the green/blue on the fog light switch and connect it to ground. Hope this clears things up,

I spent like an hour trying to figure out that damn wiring diagram.. Now that I think of it, it would be easier to cut everything off at the fuse box, though I think there are two fuses.. hmm

There have been numerous write-ups, as well as threads about this... they can all be dug up under the search button.

To provide at least a little info, I remember jumping two pins on the foglight relay in my '91 318is... I forget which ones though.
