Hey guys after I washed the car, noticed that there was water in the rear trunk passenger area. checked the trunk gasket and it's good. Just changed it last year. thinking maybe the sunroof next :?

    taillight gasket(s).

they dry out over time and can let lots of water in- mostly because the water that comes off the trunklid is routed down the channel and dumps out on top of the taillight...

i, too, have a mystery leak in my trunk (both sides, mainly driver side though). i siliconed the crap out of my taillight gaskets, there's no way they're to blame. and my sunroof seems to be draining properly. i put silicone around the base of the trunk seal to make sure water wasnt going under it. what next?

how can you tell if your trunk seal is bad?

Well, not sure which E30 you are having the problem with, but if it is the 323i then check the antenna grommet/gasket.

If it is the M3, then I would double-check the gaskets you just replaced.

I had the same problem (I think all E30 owners do at some time, but anyway).

First, 2 small holes that were welded closed from the factory started to become weak, letting water in slowly. This was right behind the trunk gasket, towards the front of the car. I siliconed it sealed again. This was about a year ago.

This year, it started again. I check the trunk gasket, tail gaskets, sunroof drain, all working fine. After months of mystery, I finally found it: the antenna base had a small crack in it.

Anyways, just throwing 2 more less-known possible areas to check (Eric just mentioned the antenna one).

i get water in my m3 when i open the trunk and the water runs off the spoiler/trunk lid, runs down the windshield, and overloads the gasket lip. pools up on each side of the trunk

I have water in my trunk like crazy. New trunk seal, bust still leaks. Can you eloborate a bit more mystikal? Sounds like it's coming from the same area that you were describing.

Sorry for the thread-jack, but I have a lot of water underneath the driver side carpet (under the floor mat). I can't seem to find a source of water, looked underneath the car for holes, but the underbody is 99% rust free. Anyone know of a problem area?

Sure. Yours sounds a lot like my first issue, it wasn't just the well area, the carpet was damp too. Just pull the rubber trunk gasket towards you and check the entire gutter behind it, under the rear glass, for small holes. There are multiple little "dimples" that looked to be holes at one point and somewhere along the assembly process were welded closed. Get a hose, set it on trickle, and go around every area of the trunk and bodywork. Pretty simple to find the source, my antenna one was just further away than I expected a leak to come from.

Water was less (less) but I went through a car wash today and it dumped approx. 2L of water straight onto my sub box. It looks like it's coming from the leading edge of the trucklid (bottom of rear glass). I have water droplets coming out of the trunklid, is it possible that the actual lid is leaking? New trunk seal, taillight gaskets, and quite a bit of silicone ot make sure the water doesn't go underneath the trunk seal. It sucks man, good thing it didn't dump onto my amps.

make sure they are installed right.. they fit into a channel on the tailights, if it's not all the way in or there is a crease somewhere in the gasket, they will leak like crazy. I have new tailight gaskets too but there was a bad leak because it was installed improperly.

My trunk was leaking through a tiny hole in the rain gutters. Some silicon sealent fixed the problem.
