    Tranny Rebuild

    Hey
Not to get into my life story, but I got an 87 325i about a month ago and plan on stroking it to put into the 325e. As of now I've got the motor and tranny out and have started to strip it down.

Since I've got the tranny out (5-spd), and plan on swapping that too, is there any wear/tear items that should be replaced? Unfortunatly, I wasn't able to drive the car very much since it wasn't exactly road-worthy, so I don't really know how the tranny feels/drives. However, there was one thing I noticed. When the cluth was released, there was a knocking sound coming from that general area. I'm not sure if this is what everybody calls the "rattling sound", because it was a "knock-knock-knock" that changed with engine speed. Depressing the clutch got rid of it completely though.

The tranny on my 325e is ok I guess, but it does have some slight shifting issues. I know the two trannies are more or less the same, but should I take preference to one?

    Thanks guys.

I replaced the selector shaft seal on my transmission @ 180,000 miles. It was leaking oil down the back of the transmission.

that is the throw out bearing going bad. come with a clutch set if you get one. replace the 2 output seals-shifter and driveshaft flange seal. oil, replace all the shifter components and it will probably feel like a brand new trans.

Alright then, so I guess I will just replace that stuff. Unless anyone else has something to add.

Bearing on the transmission input shaft (not pilot bearing). Mine is shot, so it "whines." Pretty common with E30's (all the cars I test drove had the same thing). I would recommend opening up the tranny and inspecting the synchros and gears for wear. If I wasn't in such a rush I would have rebuilt the tranny before swapping out the automatic.

          Keep it slideways!!

Is there supposed to be any play on the input shaft? Mines wiggles around a bit, so I assume that's because the bearing is shot. Is there supposed to be any movement? And another thing: As I rotate the output shaft by hand, I get that rattling sound (the marbles sound).

Well the gears meshing inside will make some noise when you turn it, is there any lube in it?

Take the thing apart and look at the bearings and gears, if they are bad/worn, replace them.
