Test your coil pack. One of the cylinders might not be firing and raw gas could be going out exhaust valve and igniting in the exhaust.Comment

Exactly, that's why you have coil packs instead of a coil, distrubutor cap, distributor rotor, and ignition wires.Comment

Ok my suggestion is to buy thisOriginally posted by robbieostermanCoil pack ... ? I have a distributor-less ignition.

and this because the late model cover the engine you have

Next is to do some reading.Comment

Sounds like a vacuum leak Could be time for a tune up as bad plugs and wires can cause this problem. Start by putting new plugs in. I don’t understand what you mean by
“When I pulled the plugs though, they were steaming (the engine was hot) and it had a clear liquid on it ...” What had a clear liquid on it?1991 325ic AutoComment

Dont be a jack ass.
It is a valid suggestion to buy Bentleys. Then you'd have known from the start you have coil-packs.
If you get mad at the people who are trying to help you...
Check your vaccum line to see if while under acceleration it is getitng pinched/pulled this will cause similar problems.Below the radar...Comment

Exactly, it's called teminology. I gave you a very valid first place to start for a back fire for this type ignition.Comment

Would you care to elborate what how you retarded your advanced valve timing? The ECM controls both the M42 and M44 Ignition timing and is not adjustable. They are also not vanos controlled. So how did you retard the cams. Do you have adjustable timing gears?Originally posted by robbieostermanThanks for your help ... somehow I fixed it, I sanded off the crud on the spark plugs and threaded them back in, I retarded my advanced valve timing, and I fixed a semi-loose vacuum hose that looked like it might have been able to pop off while driving, and I replaced the alternator today. No problems thus far.

So me sounds as though you had some bad plugs and or a loose vacuum line.Comment

First I didn't know they were adjustable but according to the manual you need some special tools and which are not cheap. How did you advance the timing? just loosen the intake gear and turn it? Did you now the settings that you were using? did you mess with the exhaust side at all.Comment
