m50 engine rebuilding manual or writeup?

well iim getting bored with the basic modifications.... i found an m50 with a bent valve, the whole engine is taken apart and in boxes organized, and the block is on a stand, the kid only wants $100, he's a friend, for everything including the stand, i've always wanted to re-build an engine, but honestly have no idea how, i would need new valves obviously, and all new bearings and seals, the whole 10 yards with the thing, i think it would be a good, long term project to work on when i have the money. my question is, is there a BMW manual or something along those lines on how to rebuild an m50? i mean start to finish with detailed information and pictures preferably, something along these lines, anything, thanks in advance.

a bentley manual for an car with an m50 in it should have what you need.
BTW: Have fun, there is a reason why shops only work on motors :)
Also, you better modify it if you are going to build it up, a straight m50 isnt that much more power in an e30. You can mod an m20 to get similar performance.

E36 Bentley, for starters. And shouldn't the ETK cd have diagrams for every part of the engine? If not, PM Brew, he should be able to hook you up with some diagrams directly from the BMW dealer network.

$100 for that engine project sounds like a deal... You'll spend a few hundred on miscellaneous gaskets, seals, hoses, etc. just getting it together. Would you be getting the harness, ECU, manifolds, all sensors, etc. with the engine too?

nothing, just the engine and an engine stand, but for $100, its hard to go wrong

oh, and of course i would modify it, probably some m3 cams, maybe some 8:1 compression pistons and a huge turbo ;)

just kidding, it probably wont be anything crazy, as that gets expensive, but what ever upgrade i can do at the time i will.

It'll cost a few hundred just to get together what you'd already have. Then ad in all manifolds, wiring, sensors,... plus all the other various parts (engine/tranny mounts, exhaust work) to get it into an E30 = a lot of money. You're better off just buying a higher mileage complete M50 all in one piece.

But then again it would be nice knowing that the engine you swapped in essentially has 0 miles on it. It all depends on how much you're willing to spend and how much time you have for it.

Oh yes. Do it. I'm sure w/ Peter you can pull off the swap in a weekend.

peter can do the whole e30m50 swap in 8 hours or less, there was a bet, and he won, ill tell you the story sometime, but the swap into the car aside, i need to know whats involved in a FULL REBUILD, like all new bearings seals, etc, etc, etc, and i dont know if the service manuals will go into detail enough about every step, anyone know of anything?

Buy a bottom end gasket set, buy a top end gasket set and go to town with a bently and ETK.

Yeah, $100 really isn't that great of a deal considering the rest of the parts you will need for the swap.
