    Cooling Issues

Okay so my 1990 325i, since I bought it, has never left the quarter mark on the temp gauge, and I figured that, being winter, it would be good to get some extra heat out of it so I ordered an 80 degree thermo. I installed it today, and now one of the tubes (the one going to the left side of the radiator) is cold regardless of engine temp. Sitting at a red light, I could easily overheat, but once I rev my engine or start moving, it goes back down, to below the middle mark. Also, sitting still, when it's heading towards the red on the gauge, I have no heat, but once I move or rev, heat returns.
What the hell is going on? Is the thermostat just not opening? If it isnt, then why the hell is it cooling at all?

obviously, you have air in your coolant... bleed appropriately.

That or your water pump shit the bed coincidentally. That's the EXACT same set of symptoms my 325iA showed when mine went.

yah....obviously. sorry about that. Every time I drive and the temp gets up, I loosen that screw above the thermo until I see coolant come out. I've done it a few times, and lately, no air has been coming out...so I thought I'd ask.

        Thanks.

so I'm just using two different brands of ethylene glycol coolant with no water mixed in.....is that also a huge problem if I run it that way for a day or two? (I plan to flush and refill with BMW coolant and distilled water)

Why are you not running water/coolant mix?
Most cars will overheat without any water mixed in.
Drain it all out and replace it with BMW coolant and distilled water, 50/50.

well, on the coolant bottle it said "DO NOT MIX WITH WATER"...so I assumed that for the time beiung I should stay away from water....
I really was just curious if maybe I had torn somethign apart unintentionally that my car's symptoms would reveal to you.
Thanks for the advice, I'll drain and properly refill it tomorrow....unless my car overheats...in which case I'll just buy an M50.

If it said that on the bottle if must be the pre-mixed stuff.
Check your fan clutch and thermostat after you change the coolant and bleed it a few times.

haha...do you offer any financing plans? I seriously will buy it from you right now if you give me a couple of months to come up with the money....but that sort of defeats your purpose in selling it.
