Any way to replace mileage gauge with something... usefull?

If I'm not mistaken on some models the gauge that in our E30s is the MPG is used for oil temperature instead. Does anyone know if that's a relatively easy swap or if I'm going to have to get a seperate gauge?

the E30 M3 has an oil temp gauge, I believe it works, but you have to get a different sender as the S14 unit wont work with the M20.

Funny, I kind of like mine. When I drive other vehicles, sometimes I find myself looking at the cluster to find the fuel consumption for the particular circumstances!

I might just try to get an M3 cluster for the oiltemp sensor. Mine just sits at 0L/100KM. Hopefully the AA senders will jive with it, I just need to figure out what wiring is involved.

How does the MPG guage work? My guess is that it's some function of the amount of depression of the gas pedal and RPMs.

DME signal and the speedo. That is why mine no longer works, apparently my cluster speaks Hochdeutsch and my S50 DME speaks Süddeutsch.

it has nothing to do with the "gas pedal," which isn't a gas pedal anyway, it's a throttle. the "gas" is controlled by the ECU, not your foot. Most of our cars aren't carburated! ;)

I'd much rather have an oil temp ala the M3. The fuel economy gage was neat at first, but it quickly got old. I always average 21-22mpg, it doesn't seem to matter how I drive the car.

Wiring the M3 oil temp gauge is pretty simple. It's only three wires :up:

If you don't have a suitable place to fit the M3 sender unit, then just screw it in place of your sump plug. It's exactly the same thread, and seals with the same sized crush washer.

If you look on the back of the M3 cluster, you will see a three pin connector (has 3 spade style connections). One is marked '+', another is marked 'G', and the last one is not marked at all, but it goes to chassis GND. The '+' is pretty obvious and goes to a suitable ignition controlled 12v supply, and the last one 'G' goes to the sender unit.
