    Gas Pedal stiffness?

My '87 325's (m20b27) gas pedal has been "stiff" feeling for a long time and I thought it was just like that. On my dad's 01 VW Jetta, and my girlfriends '99 323i convertible (stil e36 style) the gas pedal is very light. Should mine be light or stiff? And if it should be light... how can I make mine feel lighter? WD40 on the hinge parts maybe?

I don't know if you're trying to be a smart ass or what... I am asking a very simple question because I don't know the answer. Are you talking about the bar that goes to the throttle cable??? Most of the other cars I have driven... their pedal has been hinged on top, and e30s are hinged at the bottom. I wouldnt think that would make a huge difference... but I dunno.

hinged on the bottom is for safety, prevents pedals getting caught on mats n stuff...

if it's abnormally stiff, try lubricating the throttle cable w/ one of those cable lubricator things that they make for bike throttle and brake cables, or adjusting the cable on the throttle body, it may just be in the wrong position or mis-adjusted.

Our pedals will always be pretty stiff, because of the way the throttle cable is setup. Its normal.

i just lubed mine and it makes it feel a bit better, then i removed the cruise control and that lightened up the pedel considerably. i still have a notchey feel from the tb when it just starts to open, i would like to get rid of that. it moves fine when its open, but takes a little more to get it to open.

i lubbed the throttle cable, not the throttle itself, but will hit it up with a dry lube like a silicon spray.

I lubed the throttle cable and it sorda feels like it helped. Might just be placebo effect. We will see how it goes in the next couple days. Thanks for your help.

I was astounded at how heavy the E30 throttle pedal is when I test drove mine. I came from an E36 and it was featherlight. The heavier feeling pedal (IMO) makes for less cramps in your foot when holding down the gas pedal for a long time....it sorta suspends your foot right where it should be, as opposed to having to hold your foot off the pedal. Just my thoughts, though.

Sorry about the misunderstanding :) No probs. I sprayed some wd40 on the throttle cable where it enters the black rubber covering just before it gets to the throttle body. Thinking maybe it had just gotten a little dirty so the cable was hard to move. Now the pedal is very light. Just like how I thought it should be. I'm not sure if I like it this way or when it was stiff. It just takes a little getting used to.

Ive driven an extremely low mileage E30, and the gas pedal wasnt nearly as stiff as the rest of E30's Ive driven. Who knows...

well after the wd40 on the throttle cable it is very very light. I am amazed.
