Roasted Marshmellow smell after car started up in cold....

My friend megan started up her 1992 318i cabrio today after work and said that it immediatly emitted a roasted marshmellow smell in the cockpit.. It was the first snow/sleet/frozen rain storm of the year tonite, but she said that the car ran fine, all the gauged worked, and everything seemed fine except for the marshmellow smell.. She also said it gave her a headache tho, and kinda made her dizzy :( Anyone have any ideas? She said her mom smelled it right away, and now her whole garage smells.. Interesting thing to happen, and I'm baffled.. she's sending it off to BMW tomorrow to have it checked out.. Anyone know what's happened??

Sounds like a coolant leak, if it's a sweet smell. Maybe a leak in the heater core or in one of the hoses in the engine bay.

Judging by the weather I can assume she's using the heat a lot, and when you turn the heat on w/a coolant leak, you'll get that sweet smell sort of reminiscent of roasting marshmellows.

        Just my buck-oh-five.

          Maybe...

The smell seemed to dissapate when I turned my heat down....but I didnt know if it was because I had gotten more used to the smell or not....how much do you think this would cost me??

Probably the cost of a couple of hoses if you take it to a shop. Well, and labor, of course.

I can't even begin to have a clue what prices would be though. Not a lot.

Do you notice if the car is running hotter when you're sitting still?

              ohhh yeah

I have been having that problem for awhile now. When I idle....my temp gauge starts rising. I drive around DC a lot so this problem happens all the time. Figured it would be a radiator or something....soo...I just pull over a lot to cool off or....blow the heater for a little while...20 times worse in the summer of course.

If it starts to overheat when it idles, its more than likely the waterpump &/or thermostat. If you're going to do the one, you should do both.

i think i have the same problem. I was once told that it could be the heater core. But my low coolant dummy light came on, so now im caught between 2 different problems.

I got a buck on the water pump. My '89 325i did the same thing when the water pump went, and shortly after it did that, I came outside to a 10 foot puddle of coolant under the car.

Time for a new water pump/gasket/thermostat.

and there's no problem with pics ;) lol j/k

well, honestly, the wonderful thing about E30s is that you just need a good manual (Bentley), some tools and time and you can resolve most your issues easily.

And hey, if you don't wanna get your hands dirty get some local to help you out, i can imagine it's easier for women to get automotive assistance.

megzzy babe, if you've been overheated at idle, it might just be your fan clutch.. My car had the same problem.. and if it's been happenin for awhile, it'd cause all that other stuff that matt was talkin bout... You never told me you had overheating problems!! lol
