my iX is taking a shit...help

My iX has, for the most part, been problem free since I bought it over a year and a half ago. However, 2 major problems have come up, and are really being a PITA.
If anyone has insight on either problem, or knows what is wrong, the help would be much appreciated.

The first problem is a huge power steering leak. My steering rack has always leaked slightly, but it hasn't been a huge problem. I'd just top the reservoir up every month or so, and I'd be fine. However, a couple weeks ago, the metal clamp on my driver side tie rod boot became loose/broken and now whenever I turn the wheel a certain way, power steering fluid spills out extremely fast. I have to refill the reservoir every day or so, depending on how far I drive and whatnot.

I tried putting a metal hose clamp on it, but it was too thick and didn't seal the leak.
I tried a zip tie, and that didn't work.
I tried a thinner metal clamp, and that didn't work.
I've tried the Lucas Stopleak and that didn't stop the rack itself from leaking.

I don't know how to stop it. I can't really afford a new steering rack right now, unless I get a killer deal on it. I'm not totally sure if my power steering pump is fried.
I'm debating just cutting the power steering belt, but I reaaaaallllyyyy like power steering.

The second problem I have is something with my engine. A couple days ago, my check engine light went off. I noticed right before it lit up, that my RPMs were kinda jumping back and forth between the range of 4k-5k RPMs as I was accelerating onto the highway.
Now my idle is fucked up. When I'm in neutral or put the clutch in, the RPMs jump all the way up to roughly 2200k RPMs. I can get the RPMs down when I'm in gear, but once I need to stop or something and push the clutch in, the RPMs jump back up.
The car drives fine other than that, and I can't hear/see anything wrong with the engine when it's running. The only problem is the idle, and when I shut the car off, it kind of "winds" down before kind of shuddering a bit before finally turning off. This also started happening when the check engine light went off.

I don't know if it's something timing related or if I have an intake leak or something.
    Any insight?

I don't know if the two problems are related, I just want to get both of them fixed and get the car running properly.

The seals on the ends of the steering rack are shot, the only real fix for that will be to replace the rack. Check the FS forum. I have seen a couple for around $100 or so. Used, but remans are close to $300 or so + core. The idle problem is more than likely a vacuum leak but is not related to the steering problem.

As stated, the only fix for the power steering leak will be a rack rebuild (difficult) or a replacement rack.

The idle problem will be one, or a combination of, intake leak, sticky or bad ICV, sticky throttle cable, or sticky throttle body.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Yea your best bet is to check all your vacuum related components.

I guess I'll start looking for used iX racks then, dammit.

Can I still safely drive the car short distances with the idle problem?

man o man. I wish you were closer. I could be of help with idle problem. First thing I would do is clean the ICV. Take that bitch off and spray it out with brake cleaner. Make sure it is dry before you reinstall it. You can tell its dry by giving it a nice quick shake close to the ground and see if any break cleaner comes out. If not then reinstall it and see if that fixes the problem. It has fixed mine a few times I know that.

Now about the rack, eeek. I have no idea if iX racks are specific to that moded or not. If not you may get lucky and findone that is in decent shape and replace it. Thats really all you can do.

I'm sorry your having problems man. But at least PS Pumps and racks are only like 600 to 800 bucks for both. Thats pretty cheap for BMW's. Did you check the intake boot for fractures or cracks? Whatever you do don't cut the PS belt, that is not the correct fix and will only fuck it up more when the time comes to fix it up right. You'd be doing more damage then good.

BTW I love the color on your iX, Would look bomb with a CF trunk deck.

check your throttle cable if there is any play with it and adj accordingly..as well check your throttle stop screw maybe it backed out a little causing the plate to stay open when your car is idling causing the idle to be higher

I'll check my intake boot again, I looked at it, and there didn't seem to be anything there, but we'll see.

Thanks. I have an Mtech1 spoiler, but it's color matched to the DS. :)
