engine died on the way to work

so i was driving into work today, everythings fine and dandy. about a mile away from my work my engine just shut down and wouldnt fire back up. i coasted into a parking lot and tried to turn it over and it turns over it just sounds like the starter isnt catching and firing up. as many of you know my brother(tj/digitalwave) has had an e30 and an e36 for years and knows his share about it so he had me check my fuses and they're all fine.
any ideas on what it could be? fuel pump, starter, something?
im getting it towed back to my house later today so any ideas on anything i can do to possibly start it up and drive it home. jump it maybe?

    thanks for any advice.

          Fuel test

Disconnect fuel line, turn over engine to see if your pump works.
          Good luck

pull a spark plug, ground it on the engine somewhere, have somebody crank the car and see if it sparks or not.
