tricks to changing out the power steering hoses

trying to do this right now on the 318is. there are three hoses, two of which are in really tight places. I managed to change the hose that runs from the resevoir to the pump, but cant get to the two that bolt onto the steering rack. anyone what size bolts these are?

22/19/ and 24 I believe I know the ones on the pump are 19 and 22

tight? i replaced all p/s hoses on my 318is and it was far from tight. remove the airbox this might help. also remove the resivor and start the banjo bolts on the steering rack, & pump before you connect the other side's of the hoses to the resivor. this will help align them, and dont overtighten the banjo bolts, dont forget the are hollow.

so you worked from the top to replace this hose?

thats the hose that goes from the rack to the p/s pump right? i had my car on a lift, are you working from the top?

all I have are jackstands. so I was wondering which way is easier. I don't see how you can reach this hose from the bottom?

Under the car with a Boxwrench, there is a good size opening by the tranny.

Don't lose the little copper washers that seal the banjo bolts, unless you have new ones handy.

Don're reuse them either.. buy new ones. They are copper crush rings, designed for single use.

well it's definitely advisible to get new ones, in a pinch they can be reused. they are solid not hollow ones that actually crush.

thanks, it was an odd angle but I was able to reach both the bolts and replace the hoses fairly easily.

dude use aluminum washers, they crush easier with the banjo bolts.
