    car chokes at 4500 rpm

my 84 318i gets off the line great

but now im noticing when im shifting through 3rd 4th and 5th

that the car chokes around 4500 to 5k rpm...

is this a timing issue or some type of rev limter?

I take it you have the same problem? The cause could be:

          A fuel delivery/injector problem
          Bad ignition wires/coil
          Bad AFM
          Bad TPS

The Bentley manual has a suite of fuel system tests that will reveal any problems with fuel delivery. If the ignition wires/distributor/rotor are old, replace them. Check the TPS to see if the WOT switch operates (electrically).

If those doesn't help, swap in a known good AFM. And if that doesn't help, have the injectors cleaned and flow tested.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

            very sound advice!!!
it turned out that the injector wires were worn and shorting out on the fuel rail. but i didnt find that out till after i had replaced the fuel pump (w another used one) and icv and the dis-cap. the lean condition. which in trun caused the head gasket to burn out between 3 and 4.

there is still a little haistation from time to time but im pretty sure its my wires or my fuel pump. new wires are on the floor at my feet right now.
fuel pump ,AFM, and TPS will have to wait until $flow gets better...
