Need help adjusting throtte stop screw

I know that I should have left it alone.

I am not a mechanic and mess with stuff that gets me in trouble but that is why I drive old cheap cars so that when I screw them up it is not a huge financial burden as much as an exercise in my ability to brake stuff. So please dont remind me. I already know.

    That being said

I could use a little guidance on setting the stop on the throttle. I adjusted it because of a thread I read on the web about adjusting your throttle position sensor.

I figure that if I can get it in the ballpark that the computer will manage it from there. The problem is where is the ball park.

I am assuming that with the tps wires pulled that the idle should somewhere between normal and 3000 ( it was at 3000 before I adjusted the screw) what is normal if anyone knows. I figure that if the throttle stop is oper too much that the icv will not have any room to control air flow. Currently at the setting when I remove the wires connection from the icv there is no change in the idle characteristics.

I know that I should have left it alone
    btw 87 325i

I am waiting on a new (slightly used afm from ebay) So I am going to hold off on messing with it too much until I get that part.

Would this stuff cause it to run rich. I am thinking that it wouldnt because it is all metered air so the computer knows about it. I just put in a oem o2 sensor. I bought the afm with the premise that it could cause rich running and after 187K could be a ware issue.

    Thanks guys and gals

My wife begs me to buy a new car under warranty.

but I love the way this llitte car drives.

    thanks for all your help

    i do enjoy this forum

Adjust the TPS, not that screw. That screw is a stopper, not an adjustment.

Yes you are right but a little late because I already messed with it.

I am thinking of readjusting the TPS with the as it seems to be engaged at a little long off of idle. is there a spec for the clearance of the set screw while I have it off.

OR did I screw it so bad that I have to pull one off another 325i (throttle body)

      Isn't it fun.

It is a good thing that I have 2 cars to drive.

      thanks

        Hello all,

this is the thread that I got the info on how and why to adjust that stop screw.

        Is it bogus.

        thanks again

If it's from BMWE30.NET I trust it. BEN has been around for a very long time.

Welcoem to the forums, by the way!

If you adjusted the throttle plate stop screw, you need to set it back to spec using a feeler gauge.

The article you linked was for messing with the TPS, which is under the throttle body.
Note that the TPS can become contaminated w/ oil and lose its ability to engage the idle system.
Rarely will the TPS come out of adjustment.
