Might be a bad AFM, but then having the engine run better with the AFM unplugged simply says that it runs better in open loop mode. In open loop mode the engine is more tolerant of intake leaks. Before replacing the AFM make sure (via a smoke test of the intake) that there aren't any intake leaks.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
