    Rust removal - any DIYs?

I was wondering if anyone has any comprehensive rust removal DIYs, the example can be any car. My car is pretty rust free, but there's a rusted hole in the rear valence and some cancer right above the muffler.
I pretty much know I'm going to have to strip the paint, cut out some of it, weld in a patch, bondo, paint etc. but I would rather read some info on what kind of base paint should be used or how to prevent future rust in the same spot.

    Thanks.

Base coat over bare metal should be a self-etching primer followed in this case by an epoxy primer. In areas where moisture is a factor, a metal filled filler is preferred over ordinary bondo. When the repair is complete, undercoat the back side.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
