I have a short shifter on my g260 with bronze bushings, and its short as hell. It was all fine until yesterday when i shifted into 3rd and the shifter popped up. It still shifts fine, but it has an inch or two of vertical play. It was put in when i finished my swap last month. What the hell happened?

If it's using the early model shift plate type deal one of the bushings on the plate might have broke causing the vertical play. Take the boot off and check it out.

Perhaps the Nylon shifter cup the shifter sits in wasn't fully snapped in. (if you are using the nylon cup) There are two ears that fit into two corresponding slots that lock it in place. If they wern't locked in, the shifter would move upward.
If that's the case, you can probably pull the leather and rubber boots up and get the shifter and cup back in-place from the interior.
Good luck!
