so now I *finally* figure out my engine issue..

    ...I think, anyway.

the crank posistion sensor certainly helped, but the cutting out was still there. I reset the ECU and it went away, but then my idle was around 500rpm. Anyway, I wanted to check my C101 connector (big plug under the intake manifold) for corrosion. popped out the airbox, and hey, there's a dangly connector!

looks like last time tested the throttle switch I forgot to plug it back in. Well, I figured that was why my idle was off, so I plugged it back in. had to reset the ECU for it to recognize it though. Anyway, once I plugged it back in, guess what was back? my cutting out/death at idle problem. Unplug it again, and the problem goes away!

I don't think it's because it's just out of adjustment. I find it unlikely that it would have been snug for the last 14 years, and suddenly one day moved enough to make the engine fuck up. also, when I tested it, it did give a signal at the proper posistions, but as my problem was intermittent it's not likely I would have observed the problem when testing with a DMM.

Also, the small coolant gasket on my throttle body has been leaking, it was such a small leak I was going to put it off until spring. it makes sense that coolant could run down the TB and ruin the sensor. if not, I'm out $65 and I'll still have a problem to deal with..

I ordered a new one, hopefully it'll be here by friday. For now I left the sensor unplugged; yeah my car idles at 500rpm but at least it doesn't want to die when it's cold and it doesn't cut out randomly on the freeway. :)

Usually when coolant leaks out of the throttle it drips down onto the round connector for the cylender head wiring harness. It contains pins for all the injectors and temperature sensors and it can cause a lot of issues when this happens. Check that for corrosion.

yeah, that's the connector I was checking out (I think! haha).

this is basically what I get for putting off a such a tiny problem.. I've had the gasket sitting on my desk for months. :?

Can the connector be replaced if it is corroded? This connector may also be the source of my problems.

Funny thing... I disconnected my temp sensor that connects to my cold start injector - it falls off and runs better without me trying to keep it on. Tuned the air/fuel mixture and it's running much better. Eventually gonna look into the ecu aswell. I'm happy now though.

Yea its the only round one under the intake manifold. C101 is the big round one right next to the fuse box.

And before all you eta guys get excited about having something new to check on, only i cars have this connector.
