    Gauge questions...

Recently bought an '84 318i... I'm now having problems with the speedo and MPG gauge. I washed the car in an auotwash and now my speedo is dead. The MPG gauge stays on ZERO, but will occasionally swing all the way to the left and then back again to the right.

I know I was having an issue w/ fuses, but not sure if this could be the problem.
Any advice would be GREATLY appriciated!!! Driving w/o a speedo is a little annoying.

If you tap on the cluster does it read correctly? Seems if it's loose it could be giving you your problem. Try taking it out then tightening it, then check to make sure a wire or something isn't loose.

also check the sensor on the diff.. the wires going into it often break, this is a very common problem.

as nando said, check the sensor, then follow the harness and make sure its not damaged, because it could be that the wires were cut/open and the water got into them and made it completely dead

I'll check it out this weekend when I can get a moments of free-time.
I'm pretty sure (from reading severla sites) that it's most likely the connection at the differential - I'll let you know. One thing is that other things on the car are out also, but I'll try to figure them out one at a time.

          Thanks...
