Recently converted to a 25mm mastercylinder on my '89 325i. I am basically posting this so someone in the future who performs a search might find the info I needed to find, to do it. I used an ATE mastercylinder from a 750/735i/il through 2/88 . P/N: 34311156643.
I mounted it to my old Girling booster and it fit fine. I assume it will fit an ATE one just as well. As it turns out the M/C was $57 cheaper than the stock replacement. I spent more time bench bleeding the cylinder and bleeding the brakes on the car, as well as adjust pedal free-play than I spent actuall installing it. My initial impressions are good. Defninitely not too much for the car. The only down-side is that I now realize how piss-poor my pads and rotors actually are. It should also be noted that I converted to stainless steel softlines at the same time.
