HELP! Starter is posessed!

Hi guys,

I just installed a new starter which worked totally fine for the first couple starts.

Now when I try starting it the starter just keeps spinning even when the key is not in! I had to run and disconnect my battery!

Can anyone PLEASE help me with this?

Take a look at the wires going to the starter, and make sure none of them are touching eachother.

That's weird... because I have one more smaller wire and terminal post than the starter in that picture.

I have a '90 325is btw.

Checked the wiring... none are touching each other..

Either way sounds like your solidnoid is sticking. Whack it with the handle of a hammer until it cuts the shit.

Solinoid is the smaller cylinder.

You were right dude... I did exactly that and now the starter behaves normally!

The starter wasn't the problem.

NP dude, happy to help.

This falls under the "shit happens" catagory. New starter or not the solinoid can still get caught on a sliver of the flywheel and not be able to disengage.

Just as an FYI your starter wasn't actually running, the clutch inside of it was just whining because it was being driven by the flywheel. Although this doesn't *really* hurt the starter in our cars I still would not recommend making this a daily routine.

The solenoid comes with the starter.
