    Chuga Chuga Zoom

Car has been having this recurring problem, sometimes when I'm taking off the car will just chug and I hold the pedal to the floor and it will barely keep moving and then 3 seconds later it snaps my head back (well as much as the the m20b27 can make one's head snap). Sometimes helps if I take off the gas for a moment. Also helps to change gear, shifting down or up both helps.

The problem is usually at takeoff but sometimes happens going into second.

Recently replaced the engine with a new(er) m20b27. Had the problem before and after this swap. When I did the swap I rebuilt the injectors and just I just put new spark plugs in it.

I'm thinking fuel pump but just wanted to get some other ideas before dropping $200 on a part I might not need.

That sounds to me like intake leaks and/or a bad AFM.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I kept my original AFM when I swapped out the engine, I think I have another one that I can try.

So smoke test for the intake leak?

If I have to get a new AFM would anyone recommend an m30 afm swap?

could be a bad TPS as well, but i'd bet on AFM.

When I first bought my car it had a bad hesitation ( maybe half a second to 1 second before full power).
Replacing the spark plugs had no effect
Replacing the distributor cap and rotor helped quite a bit
Replacing the spark plug wires almost fixed it completely

The engine runs very good with just those items done.

I had also changed the timing belt, air filter, O2 sensor, coolant temp sensor and cleaned the ground wires which have all improved overall performance but had no effect on curing the hesitation.

I do not have any hesitation anymore but if I was seeking more crisp performance I would guess that my airflow meter is old and lazy and look there.

For now, I would check into plug wires. Mine were originals (still had cosmoline on them) at 188k.

Have new(er) bavauto wires that are only a couple years old. new distributor rotor and cap. I'm guessing AFM, which I will be swapping with a new(er) part this week sometime.

Fuel pump or fuel transfer pump if early model? I had the same problem where id press the gas and no response for a second or two then full power. replaced fuel transfer pump solved problem.

Build date is July 86 so I might try the fuel transfer pump if problem persists. Swapped out the AFM today and so far it has ran smoothly but only time will tell if the problem is fixed

Most likely it's you AFM, and there was a gash in the line going from the fuel pressure regulator into the intake manifold; replaceing that helped too.

So wait BG40 you also had this same problem? I'll check that line. Swapping the AFM did help a bit. It still chugs a little bit but instead of being 20% power when chugging its like 70%, but it is still doing it a little bit. I think I'll have a smoke test done on it.

interested to know if your car goes back to its old ways after a few drive cycles and the cars computer fully learns the new AFM.

i have a suspicion my fuel transfer pump is out too. is it common for them to buzz loudly and audibly enough to hear it while standing next to the car?

You should not be able to hear either pump over the noise of the engine.

you dont even have to bend down to hear it. you can stand anywhere by the side of the car and hear it very plainly. buzzzzzzzz.

a friend of mine told me it sounds like ducks in the distance. lol.

i guess thats my starting issue.

Car has definitely not gone back after few drive cycles, in fact it seems to have been better at first now it has pretty much returned to the hesitation that it had before. Swapping out fuel pumps today.

Alright well car has starting running bad again if not worse. Is there a difference between fuel pump and fuel transfer pump? Bentley says that the pump is under the car but isnt it under the back seat access panel? I have a 86.5 325e.

I will be trying the pump next and then throttle body sensor.

There isn't any chance that this is a chip issue is there? Never did it before I put my Mark D chip in, could I have gotten a dud? I remember when was getting a chip he said that he had just had a bad batch of blank chips.
