cleaning up the inside of the valve cover

While I was waiting for parts to come so I can fix my car, I figured I'd replace my valve cover gasket and check out my timing gears. On the inside of the valve cover, some spots have patches of baked on oil that don't come off with pb blaster. I'm not sure about taking a wire brush to it, any other ideas?

      oven cleaner ?

I know what you're talking about - that oil/varnish/film just doesn't want to come off.
I plan to try oven cleaner next time I get the chance..

Gas and a green scrubby thing works quite well. Forgot to get a before pic, but here's after 2 rounds of gas and scrubbing. The dark spots the scrubby can't really reach show what 75% of the inside of the valve cover looked like.

Tackling the cosmoline on the outside tomorrow or saturday.
