Causes for Broken Rings + Piston Hot Spots?

Tore down my bottom end this weekend and 3 pistons had broken rings on them. Also found one piston with a 1/4" hole in the side of it. I was told this was a "hot spot." It is located right around the rings (this piston was one with broken rings).

The piston with a hole in it also created a groove in the cylinder wall where the hot spot formed.

Luckily I've got a buddy who's selling me his low miles bottom end, but I still would like to know what the cause of these issues are.

    Destruction pics to come soon...

detonation, high EGTs - could be caused by a # of things. But M20 pistons are known to be a bit brittle, turbo guys break the ring landings all the time.
