    Funky+high idel problem....

FIst of all, i searched but couldn't find anything?Idle, not idel!!! stupid computer

My E30 seems to idle really rough when its cold, idle's up&down until its warm. and then it idles really high when its warm.....at around 1500rpm sometimes around 1000rpm......bad icv? i unpluged it and the car didn't run or hold a idle at all....what else to look for?

    thanks.

could possibly a bad ECT sensor. I had that problem in my e30, and waiting until mid-winter to replace it. Runs like a champ now :)

i would suggest what he said and also test your icv and tps. my tps was bad causing a very high idle of 1500-2000 rpms

                      1990 325i...

btw i've noticed somthing weird too, when i am driving and shifting through gears. when engaging the clutch, the rpm doesn't suddenly drops down....it takes it time, do you know what i mean? drops down really slow when engaging the clutch. i just thought this might be related to the problems i am having rightnow.

also the car is making the exact same smell my old car made before i snapped a rocker arm...:S....i am going to adjust them and replace the ECT asap.

the rev hang is because of the high idle, mine did the same thing. before you go replacing anything, take your tps off and see if it still clicks when you turn the shaft of it and you might also want to check it with a multimeter. another thing, and might probably be the first thing you should do is check for vacuum leaks, as it may also cause the idle to be a bit higher. if you have access to a Bentley manual, look in the fuel section i believe and you should find out the test procedures for the sensors, and go about testing the afm, icv, tps and ect. you dont want to waste money on parts for no reason.

How about when you let off the gas while the car is in gear? Does the car decelerate abrubptly or quite slowly? If it decelerates slowly that would point towards your TPS. I had this problem with mine, wouldn't sense closed throttle and wouldn't cut off the fuel so the car decelarted very slowly and idled higher. I noticed it because my wideband didn't go full lean on deceleration.

Yes it does that, almost feels like an automatic when slowing down actually.

it wouldn't hurt to repalced my Engine coolant temp sensor, since it's part of regular maintenance
