bmw fuel pumps are expensive, walbro?

i've seen walbro 255lph pumps go from anywhere from 95 to 130. and that is significantly cheaper than the $187 for a bmw pump. also, i'd need 2 since mine is an early model. generally, installing an aftermarket fuel pump is no biggie.

    so my questions are:

    1. anyone install a walbro? any problems?
    2. how do i get rid of the exterior inline pump? obviously i cant just rip it out, it'll leave a gap in the line.
    3. is it possible to pull the line from a late model?

    tia.

I've had the experience of fixing a few "creative" solutions to the expense of the BMW pumps that weren't successful. So my recommendation is to pay the coin and replace with OE equipment.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

huh, i figured that most people who went turbo would upgrade the fuel pumps. didnt think it was that unusual of a mod. not that im going turbo (not in this e30) but i assumed more people had done this.

      edit:

apparently it does just drop right in, if you have a later model with a single intank pump.

so i guess i just have to figure out how to remove the external inline pump safely.

Basically the same as putting in the walbro.

Ive had bad luck with TRE pumps in the past, for the extra 15$ get a walbro. Ive had a few walbro pumps in different cars last for over 2 years and still going, one is over 7 years old and still kicking. The only TRE pump I had lasted 5 months and TRE wouldnt replace it under their 1yr warranty, kept giving me the run around until i gave up.

I have a walbro in my e30, was a simple install and a over a year later its still running great with my m52.

No, the one in the tank is only a transfer pump, makes like 7 pounds, just enough to feed the main pump.

              nice. thanks guys.

edit: i meant i'd need 2 pumps if i went the oem route vs 1 walbro. i do know the 2 pumps are not the same. but they are similar in cost. ~$190/each.

I dunno why you would change the transfer pump.

yeah. its just a transfer pump. get an external if u have a 2 pump setup, and a intank if you have a single (late model).

walbro's are noisy as shit though. nothing beats the quietness of a stock pump.

i was going to convert to a late model set up. the car will never see track time (i just swapped the 4.10 lsd out for a 3.73 open. lol) so fuel starvation is not really an issue. which is the only benefit i see of having a 2 pump system.

but if you recommend leaving the intank pump (fuel transfer) alone and just replacing the external one, i'll go that route.
