Here water from the public network in an engine is pure suicide, calcary formations clog the engine.
I use blue redexx coolant
Blue BMW Coolant - discuss....

If it was good old green, 1oz with sufficient water wouldn't even be that bad. God knows how much fuel/oil/coolant/blood ends up in my mouth by the time I'm done fixing my car for the day.
Idk about the makeup of the blue stuff.
Lots of "poisonous" stuff is only poisonous in high concentrations.
Even cyanide isn't that bad in moderation. Apples and lima beans don't kill very often.Leave a comment:

While I don't enjoy paying for it, I certainly feel better about using it.
Not that big of a whoop. Coolant system health is pretty important in my book.Leave a comment:

it's factory.* This has been bothering me though: My car had a headgasket replaced before i owned it at one of the dealers here in Toronto and the coolant has not been changed since. The coolant they put in was green. Is the blue stuff a more recent addition or did our cars come with it from the factory?Leave a comment:

because I'm not worried enough about 60 cents to waste my time looking for a cheaper alternative to something that gets replaced every 2 years. ;)Leave a comment:

That's for sure. See if they fill their batteries with tap water.
But paying $1 / gallon for water? Seriously? Reverse osmosis is fine, and costs what, $.39 at the grocery store? Less if you have your own system.
I know it's low in minerals; after evaporating a few thousand gallons of it in a stainless pan on the wood stove this winter, there's almost nothing left over.Leave a comment:

I was going to buy prestone Dex-Cool certified stuff this week for my 24v swap since the dealer is so far away and it is phosphate free as well. Thanks to this thread i decided to do some research on GM's Dex-Cool. A quick google search revealed that GM has a class action law suit against them for their Dex-cool corroding aluminum. I think i'll take the trip and get me that blue drank :)

it's like $6 extra for BMW coolant for 2 years.. it's not just the aluminum/iron issue, but BMW uses a lot of plastic in their cooling systems. I don't buy it locally, I've always had it shipped with things like brake fluid. Mercedes coolant would also be acceptable.
those of you running tap water in your cooling system are morons. Distilled water costs $1 a gallon.Leave a comment:

Mercedes factory coolant is what I TRY to use whenever I can. I love looking at Mercedes with 15 year old coolant and all components looking brand spanking new.Leave a comment:

I use the green stuff and our reverse osmosis water. Seems to work in everything else with aluminum heads / iron blocks, and iron heads / iron blocks too.
I'd consider using the blue, but the local dealer is a really douchey group of people, and it's not worth the 2 hour trip to go to the nice dealer for coolant.Leave a comment:

Have fun with that. I did that in the Nova and eventually it rusted through the top fins of the radiator and I have to top that shit off all the time. At least throw some Water Wetter in there to keep rust away.hrm...water? its almost free, water is the main cooling additive, it doesn't kill the environment wen i dump it on the street, and in LA it doesn't drop below freezing.
if i run coolant/antifreeze its usually 30% or less. wal-mart special, non-premix.
"blue" is supposed to be for BMW engines since it is "phosphate free" and doesn't corrode my cyl head. whatever.

I like the filtered used coolant you can buy at pick a part. It's brownish green mmm mmm so you know it's gotta be good. You can add some blue dye if you want it to be blue...Leave a comment:

I use whatevers on sale at autozone and hose water. Unless you personally put the coolant in your car and think you have anything better in there you're dreaming.Leave a comment:
