    Tie rod problem....need help

Ok, I decided to take in my E30 to a shop to get an alignment. When they tried to unbolt the tie rods from the strut assembly, but the whole stud and nut just kept turning. This happened on both sides. Now it seems a little wierd that both tie rods would do this. Anyways, they told me that I would need new tie rods, because they didn't know how to get them off.

The thing is that I do have new Lemforder tie rods on there. How in the hell do I get them off?

And for the record, if your ball joint is just spining, you need to put something (floor jack) underneath the joint to put pressure on it.

Yeah tell me about it! These guys were ridiculous! Let me tell you what happened when i got there.

It is a Brake Masters that I went to. They told me over the phone that they would charge 40 to 60 dollars depending on the car. So I'm like cool. I would rather a shop take care of the alignment.

So I took it there about an hour ago, and told them I just had spoke to them. They were like "88 Bmw, eh?" I'm like yeah. Then they said, "Hmmm....hey Bill (can't remember name), how much to do an alignment on an 88 BMW?" I'm like WTF? Then Bill says,"Hmmm....I don't know." Then the manager just spouts off 130 bucks. Just pull it right in. I'm like hold up, buddy. Your ad says 39.99, and you told me over the phone that it would be between 40 to 60 dollars. He then spits off the old, "But it's a BMW." I'm like so! It's a freakin alignment! I can do it myself, but I'd rather fork out 40 bucks than go through the trouble! Then we're arguing in front of customers for a good 20 mins on why he's trying to charge me over 3 times the amount for a regular alignment. Then I finally say, "Give me the number to your corporate office." And he's like,"I am the manager....this is it. I'm as high as they go." And I say, you really think I'm retarded? THis shop is a chain, and I know there's a corporate office. Give me the number, now! 10 min later, he comes back apologizing and offers to do it for 60 dollars. Anyways....just ranting.....

You know I asked them if it actually needs to be taken out to do it. And they were like, nope....gotta take them out. I never actually did an alignment before, so I really couldn't contest that.

You do have to remove them to be able to adjust the tie rod length to set toe-in.

yeah and all you have to do is like somone b4 said put a floor jack on it and it'l put presure on the ball joint and it wont spin and then you can wrench it off, thats how you put them on too, so i dont understand why they're having problems

uh wow, definetly take it somwhere else.. those guys are obviously brain dead. there's nothing special about E30 tie rods, any competent shop should be able to figure it out.
