take your vehicle registration card to your local dealership. And your wallet $$$$. BMW (unlike ford) keeps records for a long time and they can get your new key.

the brake lining light doesnt necessarily mean that the pads are out, it might just be the sensor,
had the same problem on my car, tied off the sensor, and i just keep an eye on my pads, when
i overhaul the brakes ill throw a new sensor on it too.

The key, any reputable locksmith will duplicate your key, i had a spare made the first week i
got the car for 6$, still havent used it, but its piece of mind. And i just picked up a lighted
blank key for about 25$ that ill take to the same locksmith to cut, this time will cost about
15$ because its a steel key and not the brass/alum that they had at the shop.

I have bought steel blanks from the dealer and had copies cut of my keys and also used cheap blanks before. I must say that although the BMW blanks cost three times as much they are way better quality.

It doesn't hurt to get the keys cut based on VIN though as a copy of a worn out key will be just that: A copy of a worn out key. It may not fit properly.
