did u remove the clutch fan? that big ass nut needs to go. remember that its left threaded so you have to unscrew it the opposite way you normally would any other screw.

        What does that mean?

You said in the first post that the lower hose stays cool. If the thermostat opens up, it should be too hot to touch... the whole hose.

whats the logic to metal impellers as opposed to a plastic one. yes i know the plastic will break and not work. but one thing a mechanic said to me which makes alot sense is when the metal one breaks off, spinning at ohh we'll say 3K, it'll chew the shit out of the inside of the engine. The plastic one wont damage the block though. is it not cheaper to replace the pump as opposed to the whole engine?

            Find a new mechanic.

              yeah what ken said.

the metal impeller is likely not going to break off. and even if it did its not really going to go anywhere. it wont continue to spin at that speed anyways the resistance of the water will stop it from spinning. not to mention the coolant passages dont lead directly to the internals of the engine.

im no expert though and im still learning about this engine as i go.

I removed the fan and the fan clutch.
Ken- Given enough time and about 3/4 on the temp gauge, the thermostat will open up.
I know I should replace it. I will look into getting that part today.
But the pulley is still stuck on the water pump flange and refuses to come off.

How do you know it's opening? Does your entire lower radiator hose get FIRM and HOT? You said once that it stays cold, and once that only the top portion gets hot.

                    Done

                    hi guys,

I replaced the water pump (the plastic impeller was GONE) and the thermostat and now it runs just a little below noon.
                    Thanks for all the help.

Oh, if anyone ever needs to get a rusted water pump pulley off the flange I suggest using a gear puller. Popped right off with that thing.
