    AUTO TRANNY on 325i/ix's

With proper maintenance, how long before you get them rebuilt?

    #2
Normally they last between 100K and 250K, at least from what I have seen.

My transmission had 205K on it when I pulled it out, and it was starting to get a NASTY Tq Converter shimmy during hard acceleration.

If you keep the fluid changed, and make sure the cooler lines are not clogged they will last awhile.

They are still pretty crappy transmissions though

If you're already taking it out for a rebuild, a few extra steps shouldn't be that bad. Its not like they didn't make 5 speed IX's, it'd just be a bit harder to find parts.

I'm inclined to agree with my fellow non e30 buddah. E30 Tranny Swaps are nightmares and Im sure iX Swaps are as close to hell as youre gonna get, but if you could get your hands on a 5speed for an iX you're already going to have everything else out you might as well go the extra yard and come out with something a little more impressive than a slushbox.

ix 5 speed swaps are NOT harder than normal E30s. the only extra thing you have to worry about is the front driveshaft, and I can take that off in 15 minutes. the rear driveshaft is actually simpler..

FWIW my auto has 164k and it's still fine. not that I want to keep it forever or anything..

actually I'm up in ferndale now, but I used to live like 2 blocks from WWU. hoping to move back to town pretty soon, it sucks out here. :(

we should have a mini Bham E30 meet.. of course I only have one other friend with an E30! (and it's wrecked) there are a couple cool guys that autox theirs in the CSCC though.

I have no idea where Ferndale is. I don't own an E30, I just help out James from time to time, such as that time when he swapped in the manual. Yes I'm the one responsible for the artwork under his transmission ;).

There are quite a few E30's around WWU, I'm surprised no one posts on R3V.

one of you guys want to buy the manual stuff from my parts ix, i have to admit i have stripped the car down to the point where there isn't much else left besides the driveline and suspension because i dont have enough jack stands to support the entire car.
