I was not disagreeing with you: I am just saying that the *old* 5W50 (it's been around for ages) and the current 0W40 are different and the 5W50 is heartily recommended if you happen to be one of those Porsche owners whose turbo engine puts out 600+HP. At $28,000 for a new bare block (bought carefully - list is over $42k), trust me, it's worth investigating.
With that said, that is a very different environment than an M20 engine: the only thing I've been told repeatedly is that the higher zinc content of the 15W50 specifically will help with head/camshaft wear. Other than that, it's all more than abundant.

I also know - or rather, the Porsche community has verified, that there is quite a difference between the 0W40 and the 5W50. Enough for it to matter in a very real sense when you're making a lot more horsepower than factory.
With all this said: Mobil 1 at $21 for a five litre jug? Where?

There is all kinds of legislation everywhere. It's easier to list the laws that make sense then the ones that don't.

There may be a difference between Mobil's new 5W-50 and 0w-40. And if I had a fully built Porsche race car I'd probably consider looking into it. But the lab results that have been plastered all over the internet are good enough for me. Any Mobil 1 full synthetic has a better additive package and zinc content then what any of my engines, and probably anybody on this forum, requires for a long life. We aren't running shitty SM dino oils with 100ppm zinc.

The EPA is the main conspirator behind the zinc reduction in oil. They want new cats to last 120k miles (probably not as easy without the precious metals as was used in previous years), and don't give a shit how long your engine lasts. I'll replace a cat before I replace an engine, screw the EPA.

anything over 1100-1200 ppm is plenty for an M20, anyway. and if you have an M50, it's less important.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Mobil has the highest Zinc counts, and I can understand people who want greater then 800ppm in their oil. But whoever told you that Mobil stopped putting Zinc in their oil is full of shit.

Rather see and independent survey, Not many out there in muscle cars nor foreign cars saying go Mobil 1 these days.

Old Red Cap sure I'll take a few drums of that but the new EW stuff no thanks.

Here is a link to bobistheoilguy.com, specifically the subforum for reporting VOA's (Virgin Oil Analysis). People take a new bottle of oil, send it to a lab for testing, and report the results. Same thing that I did.

There are pages and pages of proof that the good oils still contain decent levels of Zinc (maybe not as much as a few years ago... but still).

that's obviously not true, even the ultra thin 0w20 oils still have it (hey, how many 2010 toyotas will still be on the road in 20 years?). But it's true that the levels in conventional oil have been dropping since the 1990's.

and it's uncertain if ZDDP really even harms cats..

I was told it doesn't help the new ultra efficient design units and it still is a pollutant some hence why we have these newer oils that suspend contaminants in the oil and tend to sludge up the newer ULV this is why API SM and SJ is nearly gone.

I read the crazy 17 page break down of the EW Mobile 1 on S14.net and it was mentioned that ZDDP was no longer an additive due to it pollutes and by killing off ZDDP oils means less and less old cars on the road.

It's what the EPA and DOT want gone.

All of Mobil 1's car oils have relatively decent levels, 15w-50 being the highest, as nando said. 5w-50 and 0w-40 aren't far behind. Their Racing and V-Twin oils have about twice as much though.
