15w40 diesel oil, is this ok in an M42?

Hey folks Im kind of a noob with bmws. The guy I bought the car from a guy that recomended that I put 15w40 weight oil in my car. I go to the store and I cant find this stuff. I did find 15w40 but its for diesel engines. My question is, will I have any problems or concerns that might arise if I put this diesel oil in my nondiesel bmw. My 318is needs an oil change soon so any input would be appreciated.

the diesel oil will be ok. i read in a thread somewhere here that explained the difference, but i remember it saying the diesel oil was ok to use.

Check the dealership for the grade oil you should use. You would be surprised when you give them the mileage on the motor. I had a similar experince with a e36 328i. Bmw oil specs varies according to the mileage on the motor.

I have been running 20W50 Rotella for 3 oil changes now on 2 M20s: seems fine. I know it is very high in zinc, which is lacking in most oils these days.

Yes I used rotella t 15w40 in my m44 and it actually idles a little smoother.
