I really don tknow what the problem is, it seems like it's coming from the catalytic converter, but then when your under the car it seems to start near the end of the header. THis noise drives me insane, and sometimes i really wanna sell the damn thing b/c of the raspy exhaust sound. It's not a nice raspy, just really annoying. :x . Please someone chime in now.
If it sounds like something's sorta flying around in there, last time that happened to me, my catalytic converter collapsed on itself (crappy quality). But I didn't really get the same symptoms of the RPM's as you, the sound was always there, even at lower revs (just not as loud)

Nope, just sounds very raspy. Like a ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound. Let me know how the gasket sealer trick works and if it fixed or lowered the noise. Thanks.

I went under the car and knocked on the cat. and nothing inside was loose or making any noise.

well i reved the engine from the engine bay and i really dont think we have the same problem. Mine sounds like somthings grinding or rattling really bad. I cant seem to capture the sound though even with my dads camera. Im gunna be changing the oil soon so i'll take out the tensioner then and make sure i put it in right and stuff. Maybe its fualty?

well i changed the oil(to the same 5w30) and filter hopping for the noise to be gone but it wasnt. I would like to take out the tensioner but i dont think i will be able to get it back in. I might try some 10w

i just relized this is probably the timing chain, fuuuuuuuuuuuck

i think me and this guy have the same problem

If it is the timing chain, http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/31...ml#timingchain

has a good description for that problem. I took out my timing tensior before and i was able to put it back in no problems. If you think it's the chain, i would change the tensioner first, it's liek 40bux from BMA and it's easy, un-screw cap and change the tensioner and tighten screw/nut cap and turn on the motor to let the oil uncompress the tensioner. Done.

ive already done the tensioner, but im hoping its fualty. wasnt it hard to press back into the hole becasue of the tension? If not i will switch them back and see if it still makes that same noise

the car has 134k so i would think the chain would have already been replaced

i guess i might go buy some 10w tmr.

If your tensioner is new, no need to check it.

I wish I could read that.

Maybe it's because both your tensioners need replacing? It sounds like all M42's eventually have that problem.
