What are you using it for (ps, auto trans, manual trans)? Redline and Amsoil are considered the best synthetics around here, but do you really need that kind of protection? If it's for an auto trans it isn't worth it unless you are getting it completely flushed. Even in that case these synthetics cost around 8 or 9 bucks a quart. So for a flush your talking 90 bucks or so for the ATF alone. I would, however, advocate using a quality synthetic if you are getting a freshly rebuilt auto trans.

For almost everything else I'd recommend synthetic, but I wouldn't waist my money on synthetic for PS. I use regular Castrol ATF, but if you have a small leak you could something with a stop leak additive. People have said Valvoline Maxlife w/ stop leak works quite well.

I've been using Valvoline MaxLife since spring, I reccomend it highly - my car had a nasty hard shift problem that was documented since the car was new, BMW tried 3 times to fix it and couldn't. Anyway, as soon as I changed to Valvoline, the shifting is perfectly smooth and firm, no more jarring, crunching nasty shifts. It also worked great in my power steering, the leaks pretty much stopped. I use it in my xfercase too, but that doesn't apply to any of you.
