sandblasting would ruin the friction surface.

Dont worry about the surface rust, it wont hurt anything.

Yeah, honestly it will be fine. If you want get some of that 3M scotchbrite scuff pad stuff and scuff the rust off. It will do a great job.

A clutch works on the same priciples as your brakes do and the average brake rotor will rust in a matter of hours under the right conditions. (I've seen rust on the brake rotors of cars at my works parkign lot that I knew where driven just a matter of hours before) That little bit of surface rust will get knocked of within the first .005 second of clutch slip. The only reason clutches come packed in rust preventative is so they look good when they're sold...

I don't agree that sandblasting the surface is super harmful to the clutch.

It's a engine building "trick" when it comes to ATV and dirtbikes. A roughed up surface on the slide plates give the friction plates something to grab to and help in enagement, at least for the first few engagements. The surface will wear smooth again but it is fun while it lasts.

I (Dan) am going to back up Dan on this one. I would sandblast it, or at least clean it before installation.
