Someone wants to buy the rear bumper/plastic surrounds/etc. from my '88, to put on his '87.
Will it work?
Yes, they will fit. The shocks for the rear bumper will need to be modified, they have an arm that sticks off of them about 8 inches long that can pretty much just be hacked off altogether, because it won't let you put the shock all the way in on the driver side. He'll need the 88 diving board bumper shocks for the front too, since they are shorter.
The bumper bellows/surrounds for the front are the same but the ones for the rear are different. It'll leave a slight gap on the end of the fender arch.

wrong, the the front and rear plastic pieces wont fit. I tried replacing my 88 plastic bumper pieces with 87 bumper pieces, and it was not even a close fit. and even so, they have completly different part numbers.
i have a complete 87 bumper pieces for sale.

I have successfully fitted 88 surrounds on my old 85 325 and that was my experience. I don't see what's different about the front other than maybe a mounting tab but that's no big deal.

i guess if u believe in the universality of parts then i guess all parts r interchangable and will fit any car. i dont know where an 85 car came in but i can tell u for a fact the 88 and 87 front and rear r different. can they be made the fit. i guess anything can be made to fit depending on the level of quality u r willing to accept.

See you're going backwards, from 88 to 87. This guy wants to go from 87 to 88. The reason I brought up my 85 is because it's basically the same as the 87 body. I just upgraded the surrounds to have the later-slimmer style sidemarkers. The only issue I had was fitting the rear surrounds as they mount differently and are longer. I eventually went with 87 (non convertible) rear surrounds.

i have an 87 325is and i know from experience that those 88 front surrounds will not fit. They have a fairing on them that will not line up and look right. Also the mounting points on the side are totally wrong. Just from my experience.
