Ok, so hear me out here.
After a nightmare of overheating issues with the M30, it seems that we finally got it to an acceptable level. The M30 holds temperature, but it doesn't cool down fast enough without head on airflow, so now it's down to the fan (as powerful as it is at a rated 2760cfm) not cutting it for drifting.
It's perfectly fine to drive it around town, but let's be realistic.... that's not what my car is for. And if I can't be comfortable pushing my car to it's limits, then what is the point?
Now, down to the question. I'm torn between going back to an M20, or just going radical with the M30. So here are my two ideas:
1-) Go back to an M20. Then I can rock a clutch fan, where life was all nice and good. I'll sell the M30 swap to someone who uses the car for something other than drifting who will be more than happy with a (basically) brand new M30. I will possibly do a 2.7 stroker and most definitely go back on boost. With a clutch fan, there will be no excuse, and I will get the car running cool with the nice OEM setup that I always loved and never had any issues with.
The only problem is that I've put so much effort into the M30, and I have yet to come close to tapping into it's potential, and that gets me curious to see how much I can really extract out of this swap. After all of this struggle, if I do keep the M30, when I go boost (and it will go boost), I need something way more solid of a cooling system than what I have now. Therefore this is the 2nd scenario.
2-) Do a rear mounted radiator setup. I've been researching for a while after many suggestions. It's been recently done in drifting with Team Orange's Subaru STI. On paper it sounds very interesting, as I can have air collectors on both sides of the car. Therefore I can get airflow every time I'm going sideways, regardless of he direction I'm heading. I also move the radiator out of the engine bay, where I can further compensate for having an M30 up front, and it gives me space for the turbo setup (and intercooler). Best of all, with the radiator in the trunk, I can rock a very nice aluminum radiator with proper puller fans, and space will not be a concern.
Both setups will cost me about the same all things considered, although the M20 will ultimately cost less as I can recoup some money from the M30 swap sale.
I just wanted to hear your thoughts, because at this point, it seems like I have a lot more work in the near future, regardless of which way I choose to go.
