POLL: All out on the M30 or go back to M20?

Ok, so hear me out here.

After a nightmare of overheating issues with the M30, it seems that we finally got it to an acceptable level. The M30 holds temperature, but it doesn't cool down fast enough without head on airflow, so now it's down to the fan (as powerful as it is at a rated 2760cfm) not cutting it for drifting.

It's perfectly fine to drive it around town, but let's be realistic.... that's not what my car is for. And if I can't be comfortable pushing my car to it's limits, then what is the point?

Now, down to the question. I'm torn between going back to an M20, or just going radical with the M30. So here are my two ideas:

1-) Go back to an M20. Then I can rock a clutch fan, where life was all nice and good. I'll sell the M30 swap to someone who uses the car for something other than drifting who will be more than happy with a (basically) brand new M30. I will possibly do a 2.7 stroker and most definitely go back on boost. With a clutch fan, there will be no excuse, and I will get the car running cool with the nice OEM setup that I always loved and never had any issues with.

The only problem is that I've put so much effort into the M30, and I have yet to come close to tapping into it's potential, and that gets me curious to see how much I can really extract out of this swap. After all of this struggle, if I do keep the M30, when I go boost (and it will go boost), I need something way more solid of a cooling system than what I have now. Therefore this is the 2nd scenario.

2-) Do a rear mounted radiator setup. I've been researching for a while after many suggestions. It's been recently done in drifting with Team Orange's Subaru STI. On paper it sounds very interesting, as I can have air collectors on both sides of the car. Therefore I can get airflow every time I'm going sideways, regardless of he direction I'm heading. I also move the radiator out of the engine bay, where I can further compensate for having an M30 up front, and it gives me space for the turbo setup (and intercooler). Best of all, with the radiator in the trunk, I can rock a very nice aluminum radiator with proper puller fans, and space will not be a concern.

Both setups will cost me about the same all things considered, although the M20 will ultimately cost less as I can recoup some money from the M30 swap sale.

I just wanted to hear your thoughts, because at this point, it seems like I have a lot more work in the near future, regardless of which way I choose to go.

You need a serious increase in cooling capacity. Have you made any attempts to increase the amount of water in the system? The radiator I'm going to be using in my car is twice the capacity of an M42 radiator!

You want a large body of water, it will take longer to heat up. Then you want as big a surface area as possible, with some big fans to pull air through it (for when you going sideways). This may be where the boot mount has an advantage (much larger radiator).

What about an Electric water pump setup to cycle the water through the system after your run, cooling the car while your not running.

I'm going to place my vote for BIG everything and a turbo'd M30.

Do you have an ac condenser? If not, move the radiator forward and mount an electric puller on it with a shroud.

Glad to see the rob option back. btw. Oh, about your issue, id push the radiator forward to use a mechanical fan even if that meant redoing the rad support.

I've considered that, but although it'll take some fabrication as I'll have to rip the whole support out, I'll run into a lot of issues when I boost the car (considering I can even fit an intercooler somewhere at that point)

I'm still asking around about the rear mounted radiator. It'd be nice to meet someone who's actually done one so I can ask them little questions that aren't clarified through most of the builds that I've seen.

              But we'll see what happens.

everyone loves to spend your time and your money on the internet

I say build a well built turbo m20. im sure the cost of this rear radiator idea could cover the cost of a m20b25.

if you are up for a challenge by all means go for the m30 as it would give better results (and more low down torque).

You've seen the flat green V12 conversion on the 'tech? That had a rear mounted radiator and plenty of photos.

And, do the rear mounted unit, in the seatback panel, dual 8" NACA ducts, two heavy pullers mounted on the backside.

                      Pretty pictures... http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showpos...&postcount=339

You need a bigger radiator and a new one not a junk yard one.
I run around the streets with my turbo M30 dogging the shit out of it with out any over heating at all.

There's something wrong with that motor. It's got plenty of cooling capacity with all stock parts. Don't be crazy.

                            Voted M20 so I can have your M30 ;)

But honestly, you could just end up blowing your money on the M30 and still have it not work. M20 would still kick ass and I assume you know all the nooks and crannys of one.
