Rebuild shifter, messed up engine somehow. Help?

    Hi Guys,

I rebuild my shifter yesterday (will write some comments on that soon) and when I took the car off jack stands, I noticed that the interior lights and tach didn't work. I found and fixed a blown fuse; problem solved.

Now the car starts and idles OK, but when you hit the gas it stumbles (almost stalls) before reving up. When you let off and the revs drop, it dips down and almost stalls again.

I don't see any more blown fuses, and I can't find any hoses that I may have knocked off by accident. Could I have somehow fried my ECU or air flow meter? All I did was remove the exhaust, driveshaft, and shifter parts. I also disconnected the battery at one point. I could have phucked my O2 sensor when removing the exhaust, but that doesn't do anything until the car is warm.

The upside is that I can sit in my driveway enjoying the rifle-bolt action of my new shifter.

Take it out and go drive it. Sounds like most likely the ECU got cleared when you disconnected the battery. It needs to relearn some variables and it should be fine.

Let us know how that goes.

Thanks for the reply. The stumbling seemed too big to be just the ECU. I could barely get out of the driveway. I took one more look at the hoses and look what I found:

Not to self. Don't check only the small hoses. Check the big ones too.

You should be able to post the image using the [img] and [/img] feature....a la function buttons. Just insert the link in between them and it should be viewable.

Yeah, but I need to host the picture somewhere to use the img tags.

It's just a picture of the large hose leading to the air intake, and it's rotted and cracked. However, that doesn't explain my problem because that's before the air flow meter. Duh. :(

Jordan, how bad can the stumbling be if it's just the ECU being reset? If it fumbles to the point of stalling, does that rule this out as a possiblity?

I drove around the block for about 5 minutes to no avail. I'm afraid to go any further from home.

It can be pretty bad after the battery is didconnected. Mine did the same thing after every time I had to didconnect the battery. It would idle so low that I would have to keep on the gas or else it would stall. Just give it a little more time to relearn everything, and it should settle out.

What works well for me is a WOT run from 3k to 5k three or four times. After that it works fine.

Every once in a while on my m20 I would unplug the AFM and the car would keep a idle (poorly) then I would rev it a bit and let the ecu freak out. Then plug the afm back in - it will run like shit for about 10 sec (on the gas) and then "relearn" or something.

It make my car run a tad richer for a while and gave me a bit more power.

I just took it for a 20 minute drive and it worked!   Holy ooglie mooglie!

I was scared to leave my block because it kept stalling when I came to stop signs, but I said screw it. After about 10 minutes of driving I stopped and the revs didn't dip nearly as low, so I had hope. After 15 minutes it was pretty much back to normal.

                        Thanks Jordan, Erik, and everyone!!!

Still you have a problem with fuel metering or fuel delivery

cause when you reset the ecu you are setting it to the basic settings and those should work excellent for your car without O2 helping out,

You should try and get your injectors cleaned and check even more for vacuum leak,

the goal should be to be able to run the car without the help of a O2.

That's what I was thinking too. I'm not happy with the idea that it had to correct the default behavior that much.

I bought a MarkD 93 octane chip, but I've been waiting to install it, and I'm glad I did. It just adds one more variable to the equation. Then again, maybe it would fix the problem. :D
