    Alternator Poblems - Please help

Ever since I replaced my clutch, I have been getting all these random problems with my e30. The day I fixed the clutch, the started died. I fixed the starter and then the alternator was not charging the battery. I could not work the windows at times, but other times I could. The fan would work sometimes, but not others. The CD player turned off at random times, then turned back on. Most of the check lights were on (battery, brake fluid, brake lining, check engine). Finally, when I was parked somewhere, I could not start the car, because the battery was dead.

I bought another alternator from the Pick-N-Pull and installed it, but that did not solve the problem. I tried it out again with the replacement alternator and the battery from my dad's Suburban. It seemed to work fine and all of the check lights turned off, so I bought a new battery for my car. I thought that since the battery was bad, that mabey the original alt was still OK. I tried it out with the new battery and old alt, but it still had all of the same problems as before. So it seems that both the battery and alternator crapped out on my at the same time.

I reinstalled the replacement alternator and decided to visit my gf in Stockton. I'm right around the corner from the freeway but decide to turn around to get gas. I pull up to a stopsign and the car stalls and won't start again. I assume that it is an alternator problem again. Somebody shows up and helps me pushstart the car, and I make it down the street before dying again. I find a nice place to park and walk home.

Today, I took both alternators to Kragen to have them tested. The replacement one failed and the original one accually passed. I reinstall the original alternator and try it out again, but it still has all the same problems as before (all check lights on and electrical stuff not working).

I have no idea what is wrong at this point. please help me figure this out.

Check the large ground wire that connects the engine to the chassis. See if it's loose or missing.

I had this exact issue with one new 200.00 oem remanufactured Bosch after another (three in total) I replaced my ground cable, added a few ground straps around the engine bay and all is well.

Check to make sure the Black/Yellow and Black/Green wires are connected correctly to the terminals on the starter. If either comes off the car will dye, and or the windows and some other accesories won't work :) The day I got the m30 running I drove down the road, tapped the brakes and the engine died. That wire poped off
But other than that double check your grounds.

I had this same problem as well. First i thought it was just my grounding strap (it had broken off due to being placed in the wrong place by previous owner) while attaching did make the issues go away for around a week my battery still was not charging. I got a "new to me" alternator and that fixed the problem whole heartedly. Your first one may work, but not well so it will slowly drain still causing many problems. Get a NEW one or one you KNOW works and try that. Make sure the battery is charged as well. It really sucks when you turn off your car when you are not sure it will start again.
