I found a place that can do the smoke test and is about half a mile away. Would that be the next step or is there something I can look at myself first?

The check engine light blinks the code, yes.

Alright, then according to that there's no problem. Should I go get the smoke test done and see if its a leak somewhere or is there something else I should be checking first?

Just went down and started looking at the vacuum lines, the first one I looked at had a small hole in it. I bent it a tiny bit to see how large the hole was and it just snapped off. I was unable to easily pull the remaining piece off of the fuel pressure regulator so I didn't try any more. Can I replace just that line (if so, what would I use to replace it & where could I find it) or do I need to replace the fuel pressure regulator on the right that it's connected to? It's the line in the third picture down in this post: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1287208

Yeah, but getting a nice snug fit is tough if you are buying that stuff from the auto parts store. See if you can find a european auto parts store near you.

But yeah, that leak means lots of other rubber bits may be in the same condition.

            Inspect carefully!

I just went to a european auto shop near me and picked some new stuff, going to take the car up there and have the guy look at it if it's running well enough to make it over there.

Just got back, he had a look at it and told me to clean a bunch of stuff (corrosion and whatnot) which I'm about to do. He also showed me that the crankshaft position sensor wire was going right next to the radiator fan and was frayed so I'll need to pick up a new one of those.

                  That's probably it right there.

Got the same problem. It comes and goes sometimes weeks of running perfect then days of running like crap. It is pissing me off.

How does it drive when warmed up, does it buck or shudder?

For the most part it runs a lot better when warmed up. Any time I sit at a stop light for a long time the car will shudder/stall. Sometimes if I put it in park/neutral at a stop light and give it a little gas it doesn't stall. This morning when I took it out it was constantly bucking/shuddering/stalling and was losing power randomly. Earlier when I drove it about 20 minutes away to the mechanic it ran fine aside from shuddering/stalling when idling.

You may wanna pop the cover off the AFM and clean the wipers.

CPS can not be the issue: car would just die.

I picked up a CPS a little while ago and am going to put it in once I find a guide on that. That needs to be replaced either way, the wires were completely exposed. The mechanic I went to yesterday also suggested the AFM. He said I could bring it up after replacing the CPS if I was still having the problem and he'd help clean it out (i think he mentioned something about putting new silicone in it as well?).

Edit: He also suggested I pick up spares of the three things in the red circle (can't remember what they were). Where could I find those?

Going to be installing the CPS on Thursday, anything I should check before then? Since yesterday it's been running decently, gone about 75 miles without any problems aside from stalling/shuddering occasionally when idling. Although if I go into neutral when idling and hold it steady at about 1k rpm it doesn't stall on me.

If the CPS wire is occasionally shorting against something, then it could be the problem. The signal voltage is very low at idle, and can apparently reach 100v at redline. it's possible that there's a small enough intermittent short to only cause occasional issues.
